Here are 3 different degrees of editing I do for all my newborn photography. I get asked for little to no post processing to the full works and am happy to edit to my clients desires. Theres no right or wrong as far as editing goes. Some clients like all the flakes, spots, redness and bumps that often go with newborn skin and ask for them to stay while others prefer a more polished, airbrushed look. Or some would like a little bit of in between. I discuss editing preferences during the session so I make sure I can deliver a gallery full of images that YOU prefer. A little more info on each edit process can be found under each photo below
These images are more or less straight from the camera with only minor tweaks done to correct exposure and density within Lightroom. My camera loves to pick up the magenta colours so this is usually toned down, resulting in an image quite close to this one. I give the option during a session to have all gallery images “as is” like this one for those that prefer a complete natural and authentic style of newborn photography.
Edited images are usually tweaked further in photoshop with some added colour tones to minimise babys red skin tones which is so common in newborns. Almost all babies have some additional flakes, spots or scratches which clients may request to have removed if they wish from their face. Small flaky skin on hands, feet and body are generally left alone. For babies with severe hormonal acne, I do what I can to minimise the appearance of the acne but babies with this type of skin may benefit from a more polished look to further even and smooth out the skin.
Polished images are edited images with the removal of all noticeable flakes and spots plus airbrushing and smoothing of babies skin. Eyelids, lips and cheeks are subtly enhanced and removal of any body flakes can also be edited out. These images do take a lot more time to edit and are therefore limited to a certain amount of images that can be edited in this way set by each package. (Short and sweet = 5, Simple = 10, Classic = 20). You still receive the full gallery of images edited to your liking as per the above “edited” image.
My goal is to capture as close to perfect as can be, in the camera during the session. I have spent close to 13 or so years perfecting my photography skills so when it comes to editing galleries, I do not need to spend a large amount of time processing them in post. This saves me a considerable amount of time editing each gallery, which further benefits my clients as I am able to deliver images very quickly. Studio session turnaround can take from 1 to 3 days on average while outdoor location sessions and babies with exceptionally spotty skin may take a few days longer. During my busy times, this timeframe may be extended by a short while but on average, I am able to deliver high quality edited images within 1 to 7 days.
Stunning Mum to be in the studio at 37 weeks wearing a couple of new dresses I provide from my studio wardrobe. I love to be able to provide my clients something new to wear when they come visit me for a maternity session.
Within an hour session, we can usually manage 4 outfit changes which provides plenty of variety in a full photo gallery. A 30 minute short and sweet session can fit in 2 clothing changes.
Both sessions can be photographed on the white backgrounds for my bright and airy look and we will then usually finish off a few shots on the black background for a more dark and moody feel.
Whichever look you prefer, let me know ahead of time so I can best plan your session to your liking.
This beautiful Mumma chose to have professional hair and makeup done before her session. If this is something you would like to consider for yourself, let me know before you book your session and I can organise this for you.
I was really looking forward to meeting this beautiful baby girl for this studio session. Having photographed her big brother when he was just a tiny newborn, I was excited to see him again as a toddler. I just love it when they come back with oodles of personality! Babies really do grow up so fast!
Miss M was a darling baby to photograph. With her beautiful smooth skin and minimal hair, she was an absolute doll.
Heres a little secret:
Big brother did not want to be near his new little sister. I was warned by her parents I may not be able to get one of them both together as they have tried themselves since her birth. They were right! On this day, he refused to have a photo taken with her but I could see it was really important to my clients so I just made it happen in post processing. I photographed him on his own with his parents tempting him with food on the beanbag and then composited an image of the two of them together taking one of Miss M’s solo bean bag shots. The sibling image in the galley below were two separate images 🙂
This is such a common scenario with toddlers and their new baby brothers or sisters that even if I cannot get them together during the actual photo session, I will still be able to give the parents that much wanted image of their two (or more) children together 🙂
These pretty twins were photographed in a very quick 5 minute session in their daycare playground after I finished a commercial session at the premises. It was a great opportunity to grab a few shots, they were such naturals in front of the camera! I do love outdoor shots of children. They seem to love the outdoors and throw in some playground equipment or two, and it gets even better!
If your child or children LOVE the camera, ask me about my micro mini sessions. These are super quick sessions (5 to 10 minutes) designed to get just a few professional shots
The most adorable chubby baby boy came to visit me last week at my Ellenbrook home studio. It took a little while to get him to have a little sleep and even when he did finally snooze, he didn’t want to stay that way for long. Still we managed to capture a nice little variety of images for his gallery. Mum and Dad wanted simple, natural photos of their sweet newborn.
What a little sweetheart this gorgeous girl was! I loved this session so much. I don’t normally do much in the way of props but I always welcome parents bringing in their own to make their babys session unique and special just for them.
Here are just a few of my favourite images (it was hard to choose by the way) from 13 month old Miss I’s General session. She ended up with a very full gallery due to being such a little superstar! As I myself find it hard to pick and choose favourites, I don’t expect my clients to do that hard task either, so all my packages are all inclusive of all edited images taken on the day minus misfires and duplicates. My clients can choose in their own time which images they love the most 🙂
It’s always exciting going back to photograph a family the second time around when second baby comes along. I love seeing my clients again and especially love seeing how much baby no 1 has grown, quite often into a very active toddler!
Meet the newest little addition Mister I, less than 2 weeks old and such a sweet baby he is!
Beautiful couple expecting their first baby in just a few weeks! These lovely first time parents to be couldn’t make up their mind whether they wanted a studio or location setting for their maternity session. So we just did both! 🙂
I loved this family newborn session and I was really excited to meet this tiny little bundle after photographing his older brother as a newborn and as a one year old during the last 2 years. Lifestyle newborn photography captures images unique just to you, using your own home as a backdrop. While my lifestyle sessions are very natural, I still do bring my beanbag if my clients wish for some solo images of baby.
Would you believe this home was actually quite dark on the day of the session? It was a dark, cloudy day and had very little available light. For reasons such as this, I always bring my lighting with me to combat difficult lighting situations. I do however, still like to include some natural light shots if I spot a great place to utilise 🙂
These newborn express sessions are designed for parents who want nothing more than a few natural images of their precious little baby. Baby comes dressed in their plain white, cream or ivory coloured onsie and with nothing more than my white wrap, I will take some gorgeous professional images for you in my natural relaxed style. Best thing of all, they are only 30 minutes long, include parent and sibling shots, macro close ups and baby is usually content and still sleeping from the trip and totally undisturbed.
Outdoor family photography sessions set in beautiful natural surroundings are definitely a favourite of mine, especially when kids are involved. The opportunity to go play at the park is just too irresistible for some, no matter the age. Its the perfect time to capture families connections with one another, resulting in natural, fun images to treasure forever.
All of my sessions are naturally edited to give a true representation of who you are, and where you were on the day.
This little guy was so adorable! He peed and pooped everywhere hehe, but it was so worth the cleanup afterwards. He started off a little fussy at the start of the session but halfway through he just found his groove and let me take some lovely simple, natural images of him.
I have built my entire photography business around studio newborn photography and I’ve loved every moment of it. I started newborn photography back in 2007 with my old studio Creative Looks Photography in Wembley. This was back in the day, when newborn photos very much involved putting baby in a basket and using as many fake flowers as you can fit into the frame :).
Moving forward to 2019, I am happy to say I have settled into my own style for a number of years now, and I still jump for joy over the timeless images that can be produced with nothing more than an adorable baby and a wrap or two. This is one of the reasons I have been able to keep my photography sessions affordable. A simple workflow, being able to work with the baby instead of putting them into poses they are just not comfortable with and using minimal, simple and effective props. I don’t have a desire to fill up my home studio with as many props as I can. In fact, I keep my prop selection small, removing and replacing colours and styles as I go.
The above sample of images is my typical newborn photography style I do for most of my sessions. BUT saying that … I do have plans for some more art style photography for newborns in the near future as one of my many creative passions include composited art imagery. Excited to be working on them and offering them very soon … stay tuned! 🙂
Did you know that you can get the same studio look for your newborn baby photo session without leaving your house?! My newborn mobile studio photography service means that I can come to you and set up in your own home so you can get the same look of newborn portraits as you would get in my Ellenbrook, Perth, home based studio. How easy is that!
This darling baby boys session was done in his own home at 2 weeks old. I brought with me all the same equipment and props that I use in my own studio setting. All I need from you is approximately 3x3m square space to place my baby posing beanbag, and my studio lighting.
It’s quite a new exciting time when a newborn baby first arrives home. Sleepless nights, no set routine, visitors and siblings can all contribute to that overwhelming feeling of tiredness. Let me take away the hassle of travelling for your precious new baby’s first professional photos. Book your newborn home studio session today for an additional $25 to $50 on top of any Simple and Full newborn session.
There is something so calm, beautiful and elegant about studio maternity photography sessions. The anticipation of baby arriving is a very exciting time for new couples who are anxiously awaiting the arrival of their new little baby. It is such a beautiful, magical moment in life and is too special to pass by without capturing a few precious moments before the hustle and bustle of life after baby.
This beautiful young expectant Mum was amazing in the studio! Little baby arrived 3 weeks early so it was so lucky we got this session done just a little over a week before he made his entrance into the world 🙂
Hi guys! Just wanted to share with you a quick look at a bit of a side project I’ve been working on in addition to photographing cute newborns and beautiful expectant mothers. Many of you already know that before I decided to specialise in Maternity and Newborn Photography I used to do composite photography at my Creative Looks Photography Wembley Studio where I created children’s fantasy and fairy-tale photos for my clients.
I have always had an interest in compositing, and in fact, the creative/artist side of me frankly needs that kind of outlet. 🙂 That’s why earlier this year (2018) I decided to start Look! I’m In A Book where I create Personalized Children’s Storybooks using the child’s Name an Photo. Here is a sample page from my flagship book “If I Could Do Anything, Anything At All”
I’ve just started work on my second book titled “If I Were Friends With a Chimpanzee”. If you have a few moments, hop on over to https://iminabook.com and check it out. Thanks for indulging me in this quick break from my normal posts. I’ll be back soon with more cute babies and gorgeous mummies. 😉
Did you know I can photograph your pets with your newborn baby as well during a session? For a lot of clients, their first baby is of the furry kind and its important for many to want to have their precious pets included in a few shots with their baby. Siblings! :))).
I squealed with delight as entered the home of these particular clients when I realised they wanted a few photos of their gentle and placid pet greyhound to be included with their precious newborn daughter. Having a pet greyhound myself, I was instantly in love and couldn’t wait to bring her in and meet her. Such a beautiful dog with a gorgeous baby, this session was perfection <3.
While I have had pets come to me to be photographed before, the sessions do go a lot more smoother if I come to your home. They do tend to get a little excited in my home studio (and why not! Its a brand new exciting place to be!). In their one home, dogs can tend to be a little calmer after they have been aware of me being there a little while.
No extra charge is included for pets, however please be aware that they do take a little extra time to have them included as they do tend to not listen to me very well 🙂
If you would like to have your pets included in a maternity, newborn or family session, I’d love to hear from you. All my pricing can be found on my website at https://lindahewellphotography.com.au/newborn-photography-prices/
(2 hour simple session in clients own home achieved with my mobile home setup with studio lighting.)
I find a lot of the time, a happy baby is a wrapped baby. I generally like to start off each session with the baby wrapped all snug and cosy in one of my wraps I have available for use at my home studio. Quite often babies will get a little bit grumpy when first taking off their clothes in preparation for their photo session, so one of the first things I do is wrap them to help them feel more secure.
I then take them to the bean bag to get as many angles and poses as I can before I ever so slowly loosen the wrap to get a bit more of a relaxed, lifestyle inspired style. From there, if baby will let me, and they are sleeping soundly, we move into a few side and tummy poses, still unwrapping as we go.
Most of my babies, I try to keep as naturally posed as possible. Babys comfort and safety is my first priority and I never force a pose if baby doesn’t want to.
This little darling actually didn’t need the comfort of a wrap for her session. She was so relaxed and calm and was quite easily one of the easiest babies I have had to photograph. Isn’t she the sweetest?! At the request of her parents, all images of her uncovered have been kept offline but she sure was a little superstar in the two short hours she spent with me.
Sometimes a newborn session just goes so smoothly. This adorable baby boy was perfect in every way. He was so relaxed at 10 days old and if he could talk, I’m sure he would tell all of his friends that a newborn photography session is such a breeze :)!
I have 3 packages available to suit time and budget. I realise not every new parent wants to spend 3 plus hours in a newborn session so I have designed 1, 2 and 3plus hour session times to accommodate different needs and wants. If you are thinking about booking a newborn photography session, I would love to hear from you 🙂

I met this lovely couple before young Mister M was born for their first studio maternity session. Then I had the pleasure of meeting Mister M as a tiny 10 day old newborn. Now just a little over one year later, his little baby brother is set to make his entrance into the world. The couple was looking for something different this time around, foregoing the studio session for a combined maternity and family photo session. It was probably for the best because this little fellow was just so active, he didn’t walk, he ran! And I loved every second of chasing his happy little self. He provided me plenty of gorgeous photo opportunities, what a cutie! Now I am looking forward to meeting his baby brother due very soon.
I prefer to do all my outdoor location sessions either first thing in the morning, or later in the evening when the sun is not so high in the sky. This provides beautiful lighting conditions. As summer approaches the sun will be setting much later in the day and is quite often right before little ones bed time. I understand a lot of small children can get a little grumpy at this time as well. Usually however, the excitement of going somewhere away from home tends to make them forget all their troubles and they get that second burst of energy. But for all you early morning risers, a morning session is perfect when young ones are feeling fresh and eager to start the day.
Up until the end of November 2018 I am offering Holiday Mini Sessions. These are 20 to 30 minute location sessions for $175 including 20 to 30 plus high resolution digital images available by digital download. See my pricing page here for more details. https://lindahewellphotography.com.au/newborn-photography-prices/
Studio newborns at my home studio in Ellenbrook are by far the most popular sessions that I do. 80% of my photography work is this particular session and I could not be more happier! I love focusing on just babies and the interactions with family members. You may notice not many of the images I post has everyone looking into the camera. I do still include them in all my sessions as its still quite traditional. Clients do want them and there is still a place for them in a session. Personally, I adore the interactive shots. I feel the connection between family and baby is such a precious moment and should be remembered for years to come.
This big brother at 3.5 years was so well behaved and was happy to pose, smile, kiss baby etc. I find many new older siblings are still a little apprehensive of their new little baby brother or sister, but not this sweet guy! He was such a champion. He did give up towards the end of the one hour mini session but who can blame in :).
As for the little man, although he did not really sleep for the entire session, he was very relaxed and super chilled for the most part, and we still managed to get a lovely range of images in just one hour. The key to a successful newborn session is not whether babies will fall asleep or not. It really boils down to how calm and relaxed they are. At 9 days old it is expected this little newborn would sleep quite well, but all babies have their own agenda, and I as a photographer expect that, and work with baby to achieve the best possible shots with what they are prepared to give me. They are the boss :))
If theres one session I look forward to the most, it would have to be the baby milestone session. Its just so exciting for me seeing my little mini newborn clients come back with a whole heap of personality and lots and lots of smiles and giggles! They do change so fast, its hard to believe that this little sweetheart was just a little tiny bundle of goodness at when I first photographed her at 11 days old. I’m almost positive she slept the entire time for her newborn session, and here she is now, all grown up, as cute as ever, wide awake and full of gorgeous chubby 6 months personality!
See her newborn session here https://lindahewellphotography.com.au/11-day-old-miss-p-home-newborn-session-lifestyle-inspired/
These quick milestone sessions are only 20 to 30 minutes long and just the perfect amount of time for the older baby to come in, get warmed up, enjoy themselves for a little while before losing interest and giving up on the whole idea of having their photos taken :))). I usually ask that parents bring baby in already dressed and ready to go if possible and I always encourage the parents to jump in and have a few photos taken with their baby as well. This serves two purposes. For the shy baby, its always comforting to have their Mum or Dad nearby and secondly, its the perfect opportunity to have some updated photos to look back on in years to come.
I can never get fed up with these Classic Newborn session images! I did these many many years ago at my studio in Wembley, before the newborn genre changed its style. Fortunately for this particular style, it is still very much in and believe it will continue for many more years to come. Set up on a black background and one single light source, you cannot get more simpler than this. Single, nude baby with no colour or prop distractions. Best of all these sets look fantastic in colour and black and white. In fact, I had a hard time trying to decide which version to show off, but decided in the end, colour it is for this blog post.
Mister J here was just such a lovely baby to photograph. He was a little bit grumpy but oh so sweet and you wouldn’t be able to tell, he was being bottle fed behind a bit of black fabric. His Mum requested just a few simple shots on the black background done in the family home. All I needed to bring with me was my studio lighting, posing beanbag, black background and a small basket of wraps for modesty, and was able to set up a little mini studio in the lounge room in around 15 minutes.
Maternity sessions are just so lovely to shoot. I am a Perth maternity photographer who LOVES what I do. Theres something so calm and beautiful about maternity sessions. I love meeting new expecting parents to be, and sharing in their excitement over the impending arrival of their newborn baby.
My sessions are all very relaxed and unlike traditional portraiture, a good portion of my shots involves focusing on the growing baby bump. Most ,maternity clients come to see me between 32 and 36 weeks. This is a great time for photos as the belly is not so huge and the Mummy-to-be is still feeling fabulous and mobile.
I adore the simplicity of my maternity studio sessions and these images are a perfect compliment for the newborn images taken when my clients return with their new little addition.
This maternity session was extra special for me as not only did the couple bring in their utterly sweet, excitable and friendly dog in to be included in some of the shots, but they also were long time clients from my old studio from many, many years ago, Creative Looks Portrait Photography in Wembley! They haven’t changed one bit! Well done you two 🙂
Please visit my pricing page at https://lindahewellphotography.com.au/newborn-photography-prices/ to view my full range of sessions.
Meet Mister L, just 14 days old, ever so handsome and so well behaved for his 2 hour Simple session! The images you see here is very typical of my style. Simplistic and as natural as possible. I consider all my sessions (regardless of which photography session package chosen) as baby led posing, which means I let baby decide which poses he or she would like to settle into and then I just gently guide them into place, moving a leg or arm here and there. From there on I use a variety of pleasing angles so I can capture as many shots as possible without moving baby too much before I move onto the next guided pose. Not all babies like all poses and I will not force them into a position if they don’t want to get into them. As the majority of my sessions are short, there is simply not enough time to wait for baby to fall into a very deep sleep for the more complex poses.
My props, if I use them are also very simple, consisting of a bowl which can be seen in the image below. If I want to get really crazy, and at the parents request, I have a very small handful of hats that can be placed on baby for a few shots. For the most part though, I like to keep things very simple with wraps and just baby.
If you would like to incorporate more props into your newborn session, please do let me know at the time of your session as I tend to not bring them out unless they have been asked for.
