My Simple Approach to Newborn Photography

Over the years, I’ve developed a simple, consistent workflow for my newborn sessions, and it’s one that I find works beautifully for most babies. It’s gentle, efficient, and designed to create a relaxed experience for both parents and their little ones.

Almost every session starts the same way: with family portraits. This includes parents and siblings, capturing that special early connection in a calm and natural way. From there, I move into sibling shots, keeping things simple and age appropriate, especially if toddlers are involved. Once those are done, we shift the focus to baby only images.

By this point, baby is usually wrapped and starting to settle into a deeper sleep. That’s when I can gently move through a series of solo setups, posing baby in ways that are safe, comfortable, and timeless. I keep things minimal, focusing on soft fabrics, parents choice of colours, and natural tones. I’ll make slight skin tone adjustments if baby is a little red or jaundiced, but I try to keep everything looking as true to life as possible.

This method has served me well for years, and honestly, I do it almost on autopilot now. It gives me the consistency I know my clients value. You’ll notice that the photos on my website and social media follow the same simple style. No surprises, just a clean gallery with a variety of soft, beautiful images to choose from.

If you’re after a simple, stress free newborn session with a variety of colours and a predictable, polished gallery, I’d love to hear from you :).
